Sekakoh Empowers Rural Communities with Agricultural Training and Quality Seeds

Ntui, Cameroon – In a bold step toward fostering rural development and advancing biodiversity conservation, Sekakoh, a Cameroonian Civil Society Organization (CSO), has recently concluded an impactful agricultural initiative across the villages of Kamkata and Jerusalem, situated within the Ntui and Yoko communes.

Funded by the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF), the project aims to bolster food security, mitigate farmer-herder conflicts, and promote sustainable land management practices within the vicinity of the Mpem et Djim National Park.

Key Activities and Outcomes:

  • Distribution of High-Yield Seeds: A total of 80 women farmers were provided with 100kg of improved bean seeds and 1,000kg of cassava cuttings sourced from the IRAD research institute, a move that is set to significantly increase crop yields across the region.
  • Capacity-Building Workshops: The initiative also saw 75 women farmers—including a number of internally displaced persons from the ongoing Anglophone crisis—and 40 pastoralists benefit from training sessions focusing on:
    • Effective soil preparation and land optimization techniques.
    • Sustainable farming practices such as crop rotation and biological pest control.
    • Conflict resolution methods for better management of shared natural resources.
  • Testimonials: Individuals like Joséphine Ignam from Kamkata and Philomene Mendzina from Jerusalem shared their excitement about the introduction of eco-friendly agricultural practices that are not only increasing crop production but also preserving the environment. As Philomene Mendzina noted, “This is the first time our group received direct support. Thank you, Sekakoh, for remembering the grassroots.”

Why It Matters:

Sekakoh’s agricultural initiative plays a crucial role in fostering peaceful coexistence between farmers and pastoralists while enhancing environmental stewardship. Their approach, grounded in hands-on support and follow-up field visits, is designed to create lasting benefits for vulnerable communities. This effort not only helps improve agricultural productivity but also promotes sustainable practices that are essential for the long-term health of the land.

Quote: “This project has opened our eyes to methods that respect nature and improve our yields. It’s a hopeful step towards self-sufficiency.” — Joséphine Ignam, Farmer.
